Save Our Bees
Protecting Bumblebees and Urban Pollinators
Bumblebees and other pollinators play a vital role in our ecosystems and food systems. Over 75% of the world’s crops depend on pollinators like bees, yet these critical species are declining at an alarming rate. Habitat destruction, urbanization, and pesticide use have caused global bumblebee populations to plummet, with nearly 1 in 4 species at risk of extinction.
Bumblebee and Pollinator Conservation
At the Saviour Earth Foundation, we are committed to reversing this trend through our Bumblebee and Pollinator Conservation Initiative, focused on protecting nesting sites, creating urban habitats, and promoting the restoration of native plant species. Once we receive funding, we will implement a comprehensive plan designed to rebuild pollinator populations and create sustainable, thriving environments for bumblebees and solitary bees in both urban and rural areas.
Our Solution: A Comprehensive Plan to Save Bumblebees and Urban Pollinators
1. Bumblebee Nest Conservation
Objective: To identify, protect, and restore natural bumblebee nesting sites from destruction caused by habitat loss and urbanization.
• The Issue: Bumblebees nest in the ground or in vegetation, but land development, agriculture, and urban sprawl have reduced their available nesting habitats, contributing to their decline.
• What We Will Do:
• Work with ecologists to map and identify natural bumblebee nesting sites.
• Secure and protect these areas through land management agreements and conservation programs.
• Raise awareness within communities about protecting ground-nesting sites from disturbances such as tilling, construction, or pesticides.
• Expected Impact: Increase protected bumblebee nesting sites by 30% in targeted regions, providing safer habitats for their colonies to grow and thrive.
2. Flowering Green Roofs
Objective: To encourage the adoption of green roofs with flowering plants, providing new habitats and foraging opportunities for urban pollinators.
• The Issue: Urbanization leads to habitat loss, reducing the availability of foraging resources for bees. Green roofs with pollinator-friendly plants can provide critical nectar and pollen sources in urban environments.
• What We Will Do:
• Promote green roof installations in urban areas, particularly on public buildings and commercial properties.
• Partner with local governments and businesses to incentivize the planting of native, pollinator-friendly flowers on rooftops.
• Provide guidelines and resources to help individuals and companies design and maintain flowering green roofs.
• Expected Impact: Establish 500 green roofs in urban areas, creating new habitats and foraging grounds for bumblebees and solitary bees, improving their populations in cities.
3. Bee Hotels in Urban Spaces
Objective: To install bee hotels in cities, offering essential nesting and shelter for solitary bee species, which are critical pollinators in urban areas.
• The Issue: Solitary bees, which make up the majority of bee species, do not live in hives and require safe, undisturbed places to nest. Urbanization has led to a scarcity of natural nesting habitats.
• What We Will Do:
• Install bee hotels in parks, community gardens, and urban green spaces to provide safe nesting habitats for solitary bees.
• Partner with schools, community organizations, and local governments to incorporate bee hotels into urban landscapes.
• Create educational programs to teach communities about the importance of solitary bees and how they can contribute to bee conservation.
• Expected Impact: Install 1,000 bee hotels in urban spaces, supporting the growth of urban pollinator populations and increasing pollination rates for local plants and crops.
4. Native Plant Restoration
Objective: To promote the restoration and planting of native flowers, which provide essential nectar and pollen for bumblebees and other pollinators.
• The Issue: Non-native and ornamental plants often lack the necessary nectar and pollen that bees rely on for food. Restoring native plant species is crucial to supporting healthy pollinator populations.
• What We Will Do:
• Collaborate with communities, businesses, and landowners to restore native plants in gardens, parks, and open spaces.
• Distribute seed kits of native, pollinator-friendly plants to individuals and organizations looking to create bee-friendly habitats.
• Educate the public about the importance of native plant species and their role in supporting bee populations.
• Expected Impact: Restore 100,000 square feet of native plant habitat, ensuring that pollinators have access to the food sources they need to survive and thrive.
Here’s how your donation will make a difference:
• 30% increase in protected bumblebee nesting sites, ensuring safe habitats for their colonies.
• 500 new flowering green roofs in cities, providing urban bees with much-needed foraging grounds.
• 1,000 bee hotels installed to shelter solitary bees and promote urban pollination.
• 100,000 square feet of native plants restored, offering bees the nectar and pollen essential for their survival.
Join us today in safeguarding the future of bumblebees and pollinators. Your donation will directly support the protection of nesting sites, the creation of urban habitats, and the restoration of native plants that bees rely on. Together, we can reverse the decline of these crucial pollinators and ensure a thriving, sustainable future for all.
