Migration Protection
Advocating for safe migration routes for whales and turtles.
Our oceans are facing a crisis. Sea turtles and whales, two of the most iconic marine species, are being pushed to the brink by human interference. Sea turtles face massive habitat loss, with only 1 in 1,000 hatchlings surviving to adulthood, while over 300,000 whales, dolphins, and porpoises die each year from entanglement in fishing gear or collisions with ships. At the Saviour Earth Foundation, we are ready to take immediate action once we receive the necessary funding to implement our Sea Turtle and Whale Conservation Initiative. This initiative focuses on protecting sea turtle nesting beaches and ensuring safe whale migration routes.
Our Solution: A Comprehensive Plan to Save Marine Migration Routes
1. Turtle Nesting Beach Protection
With funding, we will establish protected areas on vital sea turtle nesting beaches, safeguarding eggs and hatchlings from human interference and environmental threats.
• The Issue: Coastal development, poaching, and artificial light pollution have decimated sea turtle nesting habitats. As a result, sea turtle populations are plummeting, with all seven sea turtle species listed as endangered or vulnerable.
• What We Will Do:
• Secure and designate key nesting beaches as protected zones, reducing human disturbances.
• Implement lighting regulations and use artificial light shields to prevent hatchling disorientation, a key cause of death.
• Conduct patrols and monitoring during nesting season to prevent egg poaching and increase survival rates.
• Expected Impact: Protect thousands of hatchlings annually, improving survival rates and helping rebuild endangered sea turtle populations.
2. Whale Migration Route Protection
Once funded, we will advocate for international measures to protect crucial whale migration routes, reducing the dangers posed by shipping traffic and industrial activity.
• The Issue: Industrial shipping lanes overlap with whale migration routes, leading to dangerous collisions and harmful noise pollution that disrupts whale communication. Currently, 90% of whale species are at risk of ship strikes and habitat destruction.
• What We Will Do:
• Push for international regulations to adjust shipping lanes and impose speed limits in whale migration corridors.
• Promote the adoption of quieter, eco-friendly shipping technologies to reduce underwater noise pollution that affects whale communication and navigation.
• Collaborate with global organizations to monitor whale movements and ensure protective measures are enforced.
• Expected Impact: Reduce whale ship strikes by 90% in protected areas, ensuring safer migration routes and healthier whale populations.
